The Metamorphosis - Franz Kafka
My Rating: 5/5
I got this little gem of a book from my dad, as he himself is a huge fan of Kafka and his philosophy. As the tradition goes, I never read about a book or a movie that I am about to watch, as I love getting surprised by what I am reading and watching when I know nothing about it and more than half the time my guesswork goes out the window. The same happened in this case too; I thought it must be a story about a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, but I couldn’t imagine in my wildest imagination that Kafka turns a human into a beetle. What happens next is totally unpredictable, heart-touching, riveting, engrossing, and I must not say anything about the ending for those who plan to read this one. Although the book I got from Dad was a pocked size with hardly 90+ pages but with an amazing front page, I guess I finished it in two sittings only as my mind wanted to race to the end to know what will happen with the young guy was the sole breadwinner of the family with a sister and dependent parents. What happens to his professional life, and his manager who visits his home to check on the whereabouts of his colleague who doesn't turn in for work for days. What broke my heart was his parents' reaction to his transformation, as if they blamed him for the same, especially his father and sister, who initially took care of him but later turned a blind eye to his needs, and further down the line he becomes a burden on the family. How it ends: one needs to read the book, although I expected a different ending, but somehow could also accept the end that Kafka offers.
Do let me know if you have read this one and were able to interpret its meaning, as the Internet is full of vague theories which somehow do not work for me. I am contemplating watching one of the adaptations of this book, if anyone has actually made a good one.
